MOKiN USB-C Docking Station Review

MOKiN makes multi-port USB-C hubs and docking stations, from about $10 for a simple adapter to $220 for a full dock. It is an unglamorous category and the products are correspondingly unglamorous, which is the right approach.

The case for a third-party dock is straightforward. First-party docks from laptop manufacturers routinely cost two to three times as much for the same set of ports, and the premium buys brand assurance rather than better silicon — most docks across every price tier are built around the same handful of controller chips.

What actually decides whether a dock is good is less exciting than the port count on the box. Sustained power delivery under load, whether the ethernet port drops when the hub warms up, and whether two external displays genuinely run at the resolution and refresh rate claimed. Those are the things to look for on the specific model page, and they are where cheap docks fail.

Heat is the honest weak point across this entire segment, MOKiN included. A metal-bodied hub that gets warm is normal; one that gets hot enough to throttle is not, and it is the most common complaint pattern for docks at this price.

Buy it if you know which ports you need and are unwilling to pay a first-party premium for them. Read the specific model's display specification carefully if you are running two monitors — that is where the difference between models actually lives, not in the total number of ports.
