ACASIS
ACASIS NVMe SSD Enclosure Review
Olivia's rating
Approx. $89.00
The cheapest honest route to a fast external drive — buy the enclosure, add your own SSD.

How it scored
What we liked
- +Cheaper per gigabyte than a sealed external drive
- +Keep the drive when the enclosure fails
- +Metal bodies with thermal pads on the better models
What could be better
- –Mismatched interface silently wastes a fast drive
- –Sustained transfers throttle without proper cooling
ACASIS makes SSD enclosures, capture cards, hubs and PC peripherals, and claims more than two hundred patents across the range. The enclosures are the part worth attention.
An external SSD from a major brand is a sealed unit at a fixed price per gigabyte. An enclosure plus a bare NVMe drive usually costs less for the same capacity, lets you choose the drive, and means that when the enclosure eventually fails — the connector is always the first thing to go — you keep the drive and replace the cheap part. That is a better ownership model than most people realise.
The specification that decides everything here is the interface. USB 3.2 Gen 2, Gen 2x2 and Thunderbolt sit at very different speeds and very different prices, and pairing a fast drive with a slow enclosure wastes the drive entirely. Read that line on the product page before anything else.
Heat is the second thing. NVMe drives run hot, and a sealed metal enclosure with no thermal pad will throttle during large sustained transfers — precisely when you notice. Enclosures that ship with a thermal pad and a heatsink body are worth the small premium.
The capture cards and hubs broaden the catalogue but are more commodity — plenty of brands sell equivalents.
Good buy if you are comfortable fitting a drive, which takes about two minutes and no tools on most models. Buy a sealed external drive instead if you would rather not think about interface specifications at all.
