What to check when buying a watch

• Movement type. Quartz is accurate, inexpensive to service and runs on a battery. Mechanical is serviceable for decades, keeps time less precisely, and needs periodic servicing that costs money. Neither is better in the abstract.
• Case diameter and lug-to-lug length. Lug-to-lug decides whether the watch sits properly on your wrist, and it matters more than diameter.
• Thickness, which decides whether it fits under a shirt cuff.
• Water resistance is widely misunderstood. The rating describes static pressure in a test, not activities. A watch marked 30m is generally splash-resistant only; swimming usually calls for 100m or more. Follow the manufacturer's own guidance rather than the number alone.
• Crystal. Sapphire resists scratches far better than mineral glass.
• Lug width and whether the strap is quick-release, since a strap change is the cheapest way to change a watch.
• Servicing. Ask who services it and roughly what that costs before buying anything mechanical.
