What to check when buying jewellery online

  • Metal composition, stated precisely. Solid gold is described by karat; "gold plated" is a thin layer over another metal and wears through; "gold filled" is a thicker bonded layer that lasts considerably longer; "gold tone" is not gold at all.
  • Hallmarks or stamps rather than descriptive words.
  • Nickel content, if your skin reacts. Reactions to jewellery are usually nickel, and sterling silver, titanium and surgical-grade steel are generally better tolerated.
  • Stone treatment and origin. Most coloured gemstones on the market are treated in some way, which is normal and should be disclosed. Lab-grown stones are chemically identical to mined ones and cost less — the distinction should be stated clearly, not implied.
  • Carat weight and dimensions together. Carat is weight, not size, and two stones of the same carat can look different sizes depending on cut.
  • Chain length and clasp type, measured against a piece you already own.
  • Return terms on personalised or resized items, which are usually final sale.

Sterling silver tarnishing is normal and polishes off. Plated pieces that have worn through cannot be polished back.
