What to check when buying a battery

Battery listings are full of numbers, and only a few of them predict whether the pack will do what you need.

• Capacity in amp-hours and voltage together. Amp-hours alone tell you nothing until you know the voltage — watt-hours (Ah × V) is the figure that lets you compare packs of different voltages.
• Chemistry. Lithium iron phosphate runs at a lower energy density than other lithium chemistries but tolerates far more charge cycles and is more thermally stable. Lead-acid is cheaper up front, heavier, and has a much shorter usable life if regularly discharged deeply.
• Cycle rating, and at what depth of discharge. A cycle count quoted at 80% depth of discharge is not comparable to one quoted at 50%.
• Battery management system. Look for stated protection against over-charge, over-discharge, short circuit and temperature extremes. On lithium packs this is not optional.
• Low-temperature charging. Most lithium chemistries must not be charged below freezing. Packs with built-in heating exist and cost more.
• Continuous versus peak discharge current. Peak figures are brief; continuous is what the pack will actually sustain.
• Physical dimensions and terminal type against the space and cabling you already have.
• Warranty length, and whether it is prorated.

Shipping matters here too: lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods, which restricts carriers, adds cost, and rules out some destinations entirely.

Before you order
