What to check when buying jewellery online
- Metal composition, stated precisely. Solid gold is described by karat; "gold plated" is a thin layer over another metal and wears through; "gold filled" is a thicker bonded layer that lasts considerably longer; "gold tone" is not gold at all.
- Hallmarks or stamps rather than descriptive words.
- Nickel content, if your skin reacts. Reactions to jewellery are usually nickel, and sterling silver, titanium and surgical-grade steel are generally better tolerated.
