Athletic Propulsion Labs Review 2026: Are APL Sneakers Worth It?

It is a dark November evening. You kick off wet commuter shoes at the door, and instead of padding around in socks, you slide into something soft, quilted and a little bit luxurious. Tomorrow you will lace up a sneaker with a nubby, tweed-like bouclé upper that looks more like a winter coat than a gym shoe. That is the mood of the Athletic Propulsion Labs Holiday 2026 collection, which the brand calls "Texture Studies."
APL, as everyone calls it, sells sneakers and slides that cost two to three times what a mall running shoe does. So Olivia Reviews went through the brand's US store on November 3, 2026, checking every price in US dollars, the materials, the sizing notes, the shipping rules and the return policy, to help you decide whether a pair belongs on your feet, or under the tree, this winter.
Quick take: APL is worth it if you want a shoe that looks polished enough for dinner but rides on running-shoe foam, and you are happy to buy carefully the first time. Current US prices run from $130 for the Big Logo TechLoom Slide to $350 for the TechLoom Zipline, with the cold-season Lusso Slide Textured at $195. Ground shipping is free on US orders over $95, but the return window is short at 10 days, and a $10 handling fee comes off mail-in refunds. See today's APL codes before you check out.
Is APL worth the price?
The honest answer depends on what you want a sneaker to do. APL's whole pitch is the meeting point of luxury and performance. The uppers use materials you would expect from a fashion label, such as suede, leather overlays, bouclé and knitted TechLoom, and the soles use the brand's own foams, named Propelium, FutureFoam and HySpeed on different models.
Here is what the product pages show you are paying for:
- Proprietary cushioning. Each model lists its foam, its heel-to-toe drop and its weight. The TechLoom Bliss, for example, is listed at 6.8 oz with an 8mm drop.
- Machine-washable knits. According to APL's care page, the TechLoom styles, including the Zipline, Traveler, Bliss and Big Logo TechLoom Slide, can go in the washing machine on a cold, quick cycle. That is rare at this price.
- Design that reads as dressy. Tonal colors such as Chocolate, Toasted Clay and Plumstone, plus details like extra laces and embossed logos, make these easy to wear with tailored trousers or a long coat.
Where the value case weakens: if you need a waterproof winter shoe, APL is the wrong store. Several of the season's prettiest pairs carry a warning that the materials are not treated for moisture. And at the time of our check, the US site did not list any boots or shearling slippers, so the coziest option is a suede house slide rather than a lined boot.
Who is APL? The Los Angeles brand the NBA once banned
According to its Our Story page, Athletic Propulsion Labs was founded in 2009 in Los Angeles by identical twins Adam and Ryan Goldston, who played basketball and football at the University of Southern California. In 2010, the brand's Concept 1 basketball shoe was banned by the NBA, which the founders turned into a defining moment for the label.
In 2014, APL launched running and training collections for men and women, and its shoes went on to be stocked by department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. The brand also mentions a McLaren collaboration in 2022 and a Formula 1 partnership with Oracle Red Bull Racing in 2023. If you prefer to try before you buy, APL runs flagship stores at The Grove in Los Angeles and at 75 Prince Street in New York's SoHo.
APL Holiday 2026: what to buy first for cold weather
The US store lists roughly 780 products, mostly the same models repeated in dozens of colorways. To make it simpler, we picked six that fit the cold-season, indoor-outdoor life of November to February, starting with the coziest.
Lusso Slide Textured ($195): the house slide upgrade

If you were hoping for an APL slipper, this is the closest thing. The new Lusso Slide Textured wraps the strap and footbed in soft, pebbled micro suede with intricate cross stitching, so the whole slide has a quilted look. Underneath sits a 3D molded footbed with a matching APL logo and a Propelium midsole and outsole, the same compound the brand uses in its running shoes. It weighs 4.0 oz.
This is an indoor and dry-day piece. APL says any slide made with natural materials such as suede, leather, wool or shearling should not be worn in or around water and is meant for casual use in dry climates. Think morning coffee, working from home and quick errands on a crisp, dry day. It comes in Black, Bordeaux and Navy for both women and men, with women's sizes 5 to 11.
Nostalgia '87 Earthtone / Bouclé ($295): the winter-coat sneaker

This is the pair that best captures the Texture Studies theme. The Nostalgia '87 is APL's court-inspired lifestyle sneaker, and this Limited Edition version swaps leather for a richly textured bouclé woven with subtle metallic threads. On screen it looks like a tweed jacket: flecks of cream, rose, mint and gold over a soft ivory base.
The shoe sits on an engineered cup sole with a full-length internal HySpeed midsole and APL's Soufflé sockliner. It reads like a classic white court sneaker from across the room and like something special up close, which makes it a strong gift for someone who already owns plain white sneakers. Because it is limited edition and covered in fabric, treat it as a dry-weather shoe. Women's sizes run 5 to 11 in half sizes.
Jogger Toasted Clay / Dawn / Chocolate ($320): suede for chilly walks

The Jogger borrows from 90s track culture. Its upper mixes microfiber, suede, mesh and ribbed jacquard, and it rides on a high-stack FutureFoam midsole with a segmented Ultract rubber outsole and an extended heel spoiler. In the Toasted Clay, Dawn and Chocolate colorway, the palette is pure autumn: warm browns and soft pink-beige that sit nicely with camel coats, cords and denim.
One sizing note to save you a return: the Jogger page uses men's sizing as the base. If a women's size is gone, APL says to pick a women's size by adjusting up a size and a half from men's, so a men's 7 is a women's 8.5.
APL Riviera Chocolate / Ivory / Greige ($295): the dressy low-profile

The Riviera is APL's slim, close-to-the-foot silhouette, inspired by the Southern European coast. The upper combines premium canvas with suede and leather overlays, the signature A-stitch and a new side logo, plus a padded collar. Underneath, the brand says it tuned its midsole for maximum cushioning in a minimal stack height. It has a 10mm drop, a women's 7.5 weighs 9 oz, and an extra set of laces is included.
The Chocolate colorway makes it a natural match for winter outfits, but read the care note first: APL says the Riviera's materials are not waterproof or colorfast and should be kept away from rain and excessive moisture. If you want to shop with purpose, APL says that from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 it donates 20% of the sales price of the Women's Riviera in Ivory / Flamingo / BCA, also $295, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation's Women's Cancer Research Fund.
TechLoom Traveler Plumstone ($220): the holiday travel shoe

Flying home for the holidays? The Traveler is a slip-on, so it comes off and on at airport security in seconds. The upper is APL's 3D Stretch Rebound TechLoom knit in a herringbone pattern, over a FutureFoam midsole and an Ultract outsole. Plumstone is a deep, dusky purple that feels seasonal without being loud, and there are also Bordeaux, Harbor Grey, Blueberry and Lilac versions in the holiday drop.
The product page says the Traveler runs true to size, and because it is a TechLoom style, it is on the brand's machine-washable list. Those two facts make it the lowest-risk APL to buy as a first pair.
TechLoom Zipline Chocolate ($350): for winter treadmill and road miles

If the person you are shopping for actually runs, the Zipline is APL's statement running shoe. The single-layer TechLoom upper is wrapped by hollow-cord "Ziplines" for lateral and longitudinal support. Below that is a maximum-cushioning FutureFoam midsole split in two pieces around a slanted, forward-leaning shank plate, finished with a two-piece rubber outsole and the Soufflé sockliner. It has an 8mm drop and weighs 7.7 oz.
The Chocolate colorway, released in early November, turns a performance shoe into something you could wear with a long wool coat to brunch afterward.

APL sizing: are APL shoes unisex?
Yes. Product pages say all APL shoes are unisex, and that is useful when a size sells out. The conversion APL gives is simple: women's sizes are a size and a half larger than men's, so a women's 9 equals a men's 7.5. If your women's size is gone, pick the men's size a size and a half down.
Some model-specific notes from the brand:
- TechLoom Traveler: runs true to size.
- TechLoom Pro: standard normal width with a slightly wider toe box.
- Lusso slides: sold in whole sizes only (women's 5 to 11), so if you are a half size, you will need to choose up or down.
- Removable insoles: the FAQ says insoles are lightly glued in and designed to be replaced with custom orthotics if you use them.
APL's customer service team, reachable at (866) 672-8630 on weekdays or help@athleticpropulsionlabs.com, lists "choosing the right size and fit" as one of the things it helps with. With a 10-day return window, it is worth asking before you order.
APL shipping: how fast and how much?
- Free ground shipping on US orders over $95, including P.O. boxes and US territories. Every shoe in this review clears that line on its own. Hawaii and Alaska shipping is calculated by weight and method.
- Processing: most orders placed before 12 PM PST ship the same business day. Orders placed after 12 PM PST on Friday through Sunday ship on Monday.
- Delivery: typically 1 to 9 business days within the contiguous US, and 3 to 9 business days to Alaska and Hawaii. APL warns that weather and holiday volume can slow things down, so order holiday gifts early.
- Signature: orders over $500 need a signature on delivery.
- International: a flat $20 USD shipping rate via DHL Express, with duties and taxes shown at checkout.
Missing-package claims must be reported within five days, so keep an eye on tracking emails.
APL return policy: read this before you buy
This is the part that catches people out. APL's window is shorter than many shoe stores:
- 10 days: items can be exchanged or returned within 10 days of delivery if new, unworn and in the original packaging with tags, accessories and extra laces.
- Shoebox matters: shoes must come back in their original shoebox, packed inside another box.
- $10 handling fee: a flat fee is deducted from domestic mail-in refunds. It is waived if you choose store credit, or if you return in person at a flagship store.
- Free exchanges: domestic exchanges are free.
- Final sale: final sale items cannot be returned or exchanged.
- Flaws: if shoes or slides bought from APL directly develop a material or workmanship flaw within 30 days of receipt, APL says you can return them for an exchange or a full refund.
Refunds are processed within 10 to 15 business days after your return reaches the warehouse. For holiday gifts, try the shoes on indoors the day they arrive.

If you want the cozy pick, start with the Lusso Slide Textured at $195 for home. For a first pair of sneakers, the TechLoom Traveler at $220 is the safest bet. For a gift that turns heads, the bouclé Nostalgia '87 is the one. Just remember that the return clock is only 10 days, and keep the suede pairs out of the slush.
Chosen with care, an APL pair can be the shoe you reach for every cold morning this season.
