  • The exact port standard, not just the connector shape. USB-C is a connector; the speed behind it varies enormously, and so does whether it carries video or power. Match the device's standard to your computer's actual specification.
  • Power delivery wattage, if the dock charges your laptop. A dock delivering less than your laptop needs will charge slowly or not at all under load.
  • Number of displays supported, and at what resolution and refresh rate. Many docks support two screens only by dropping the refresh rate.
  • Drive compatibility for enclosures — the form factor and the interface. These look similar and are not interchangeable.
  • Heat management. Fast drives and busy docks get hot, and sustained speed depends on whether heat can escape.
  • Operating system support, especially for macOS, where some docking standards behave differently.
  • Whether a power adapter is included. Frequently it is not, and buying one separately changes the price comparison.
